lthough Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is only the third Terminator movie in the franchise's 19 years of existence, the saga of the time traveling robot retains its hold over moviegoers' imaginations. Considering that the first two movies raked in more than $500 million worldwide in box office receipts, the sci-fi sequel is a safe bet to end up as one of the summer's biggest hits.

A decade has passed since John Connor (Nick Stahl) escaped destruction at the hands of Skynet, a highly developed
network of machines bent on destroying humanity. He currently lives "off the grid" - possessing no credit cards, cell phone, home or job, safe from Skynet's tracers. In one last attempt to kill Connor, Skynet sends out their latest weapon, the T-X (Kristanna Loken), an alluring machine that proves to be the deadliest Terminator yet. Connor's only hope for survival is a replica of his former robot assassin (Schwarzenegger).

Since 1991's blockbuster sequel, Schwarzenegger says fans have been anticipating another installment. "No matter where I go in the world, no matter what movie I have promoted over the last 12 years, people always ask me, 'When are you going to do another Terminator?'"

Although Schwarzenegger, the apocalyptic mythology and Industrial Light + Magic's wondrous visual effects are back, much is new in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. James Cameron, who directed the first two movies, opted out of the latest, and has been replaced by Jonathan Mostow (Breakdown, U-571) who says he is not trying to fill his predecessor's shoes. "I'm a fan of his Terminator movies like anybody else is, and all I wanted to do was create a movie that I as a fan of this franchise would want to go see myself."

Nick Stahl, best known for his work in In the Bedroom, is replacing Edward Furlong in the role of John Connor.

Claire Danes (William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, The Hours) steps in as John Connor's love interest, but the newest face belongs to Kristanna Loken. Prior to Terminator 3, Loken appeared in three independent features (Gangland, Panic and Academy Boyz) as well as such TV series as Unhappily Ever After and Mortal Kombat: Conquest. With her star quickly rising, Loken is now reported to be starring alongside Colin Farrell in a remake of 10, the 1979 comedy that made Bo Derek famous.

Stahl says that he likes this latest sequel even better than 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which he told World Entertainment News Network, was his favorite movie growing up.

"I think in order to match that kind of enthusiasm, they have to really try that much harder as far as the story and the actual filming goes," he says. "And the effects, there's a lot of effects that are done these days that weren't available 10 years ago. In that way, visually it's going to be more realistic."

An alert to Schwarzenegger's legions of fans - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines could be your last opportunity to see your hero on the silver screen. He is seriously considering running for Governor of California. In any event, whether it's politics or movies, it looks like Schwarzenegger plans on remaining in the collective consciousness for a long time.
