he In Crowd
is another one of those movies that can be attributed to the insane popularity of Wes Craven's Scream series
.
You know the story: a group of beautiful teens run around an idyllic setting while being stalked by one form of evil incarnate or another.

The plot here is about a clique of wealthy college students who hang around a posh country club. Adrien, an outsider hired by the club, is drawn into the circle by Brittany, the clique's gorgeous and charismatic leader.
But all is not well in the land of the silver spoon. When the eye of Brittany's tennis-pro boyfriend wanders in Adrien's direction, she soon discovers that the group as a whole is not as benign as it first appeared.

At the very least, The In Crowd introduces a newer set of beautiful people to the big screen. Susan Ward, the blue-eyed, Louisiana-born ex-model, makes the jump from soaps with her role as Brittany. Up to now, Ward's main claims to fame were a two-year stint on All My Children and some work on the defunct Aaron Spelling serials, Sunset Beach and Malibu Shores.

outtake
Invites comparisons to The Skulls, a teen thriller that
also deals with the politics of cliques. The difference is that this film focuses on
debutantes in bikinis while Skulls is about privileged sons in black cloaks.

Lori Heuring, who plays Adrien, has been lurking around Hollywood since leaving her home state of Texas a few years ago. Her resume features films such as The Newton Boys (1998) and 8 Seconds (1996).

Then there's Matthew Settle. He's somewhat of a veteran of this type of teen thriller, having already played Jennifer Love Hewitt's boyfriend in
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

Although she's no household name, The In Crowd director Mary Lambert has great pop-culture credentials. The Arkansas native hit the ground running in 1984 with her first big gig, directing Madonna's breakout video, Like a Virgin. The two remain material girlfriends to this day, and have collaborated on a half-dozen or more videos since.

Lambert's first foray into film, Prince's Under the Cherry Moon (1986), didn't turn out as well. She was axed mid-way through production when his Purpleness decided to take over the big chair himself. But Lambert landed on her feet with Stephen King's Pet Sematary series, and has embraced the horror/ thriller genre ever since.

But the success of The In Crowd may hinge on its ability to differentiate itself from the most recent crop of teen-thriller pics. After all, the big spoof - Scary Movie - is already on the way.
